Types of Car Insurance

In Ontario, car insurance is not only a legal requirement but also a crucial investment in protecting oneself and others on the road. With the unpredictable nature of accidents and unforeseen circumstances, having comprehensive coverage can provide financial security and peace of mind in the event of a collision or damage to your vehicle.

Hicks understands the importance of finding a balance between affordability and adequate coverage, ensuring that drivers are protected in any situation. By offering personalized insurance options tailored to individual needs, Hicks aims to make the process of obtaining car insurance in Ontario simple and stress-free.

With the right coverage in place, drivers can confidently navigate the roads knowing that they are prepared for whatever may come their way.

In Ontario, individuals are required by the government to have specific coverage, including Liability for Bodily Injury, Liability for Property Damage, Direct Compensation, Uninsured Motorists, and Accident Benefits. Liability Coverage shields you from any harm you cause to others or their property in a car accident.

DCPD, or Direct Compensation Property Damage, is a specific type of coverage found in certain provinces in Canada, such as Ontario. This coverage is part of the no-fault system, meaning that each party involved in an accident deals with their own insurance company for compensation, regardless of who is at fault. Your insurance provider will determine fault and may adjust your premiums accordingly, potentially raising them if you are found to be at fault. In Ontario, insurance companies adhere to standardized fault determination rules for both car accidents and property damage claims, ensuring consistency across various factors like weather, road conditions, pedestrian actions, visibility, and the point of impact on the vehicle.

It is crucial to emphasize that Direct Compensation Property Damage (DCPD) coverage is only triggered in the following situations:

  • You are not found responsible for the accident.
  • The accident takes place in Ontario.
  • The accident includes a minimum of two vehicles.
  • All individuals involved in the accident are insured by Ontario-licensed companies.

In Ontario, car insurance includes Third-party liability coverage which provides financial protection in case you are held legally responsible for causing injury to someone else or damaging their property with your vehicle. This coverage assists in paying for legal expenses, medical expenses, and property damage that others may incur as a result of an accident where you are at fault. The government sets the minimum required levels of third-party liability coverage in Ontario, as is the case in many other locations. However, drivers have the option to purchase additional coverage for enhanced protection.

In the province of Ontario, we have a system known as no-fault insurance, wherein each insurance company is responsible for covering the damages to each car involved in an accident, regardless of who is at fault. A portion of your car insurance premium is allocated towards this coverage. The primary objective of implementing the no-fault insurance process is to streamline the claims procedure, ensuring that your own insurance company manages your claim regardless of your degree of fault in the incident.

The government has included fundamental medical benefits for all drivers to safeguard them in case of injury. However, there are opportunities to acquire additional coverage. We strongly advise you to consider obtaining additional coverage, taking into account your health plan at work and the needs of your family. Frequently, the standard limits are insufficient, particularly in relation to medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care aspects of your accident benefits policy.

In case of a car accident where you are found to be at fault, having collision coverage is essential to cover the physical damage to your vehicle. This coverage also safeguards you in hit & run incidents and parking lot accidents. Keep in mind that there is a deductible associated with this Car Insurance coverage. This means that if you file a claim under the collision portion, you will need to pay your deductible first, and then your insurance will cover the remaining costs. While the standard deductible is $500, most insurance companies offer the flexibility to adjust this amount.

In Ontario, you have the option to include comprehensive coverage in your car insurance policy, which can be added for an extra cost. This coverage provides protection against fire, theft, vandalism, falling objects, and collisions with animals. Additionally, it covers the cost of repairing your vehicle’s glass. If you address a glass chip before it turns into a crack, your insurance company may waive your deductible.

Commonly referred to as OPCF 20, the loss of use endorsement provides a valuable coverage choice that allows you to lease a vehicle while your own vehicle is being repaired. This coverage is generally cost-effective and proves advantageous in circumstances where you require a rental vehicle due to an insurance claim. Without this car insurance coverage in Ontario, you would be responsible for making your own arrangements for transportation while your car undergoes repairs.

You have achieved a commendable driving history. We encourage you to maintain it. Accident forgiveness, also referred to as claims forgiveness, enables you to safeguard your record and preserve a good driver status following an at-fault accident.

The OPCF 43 endorsement, also known as the Waiver of Depreciation, is designed to protect new vehicles by ensuring that depreciation is not factored in for 24 to 48 months. In the event of an accident within this timeframe, you can either replace your new car with a brand-new vehicle or receive the original purchase value instead of the depreciated amount. This coverage is highly beneficial in maximizing the claim value for new vehicles. Remember to submit a bill of sale or purchase agreement to your insurance provider in order to obtain this endorsement.
